Death is an Unavoidable Transition to an Immortal World

An excavated grave according to the teachings of Islam

One of the unavoidable predictions is that we will all die at some point. Whether you believe in Allah or are an atheist, there will come a moment when you will no longer exist. This is a fact, and nobody in this world can change it. Death is, indeed, bitter, and every living soul must taste its bitterness.

Our existence in this world is controlled by our delusions to amass worldly grandeur. These delusions allow us to forget or ignore that the end is closer than it seems. "The life of this world is simply the delight of falsehood," Allah (SWT) declared in the Glorious Qur'an chapter two, verse 185. Thus, whoever worships Allah alone will be fully rewarded on the Day of Judgment; and woe to whoever disregards the words of Allah for his selfish interest.

Therefore, whether we achieved our hopes and dreams or not, the Angel of Death will undoubtedly knock on our door. When the Angel of Death visits those who worship just Allah and trust in all of His prophets will have their souls taken gently and peacefully; on the other hand, those who link Allah with what He has disassociated Himself from the Angel will have their souls seized ruthlessly.

The secret of death is, indeed, beyond the realm of human comprehension. Nobody knows when he/she will die or the end of time will arrive. You have no idea how or where you will die. Only Allah, the Exalted, knows the precise day and hour of our death, as well as the Day of Retribution. Nevertheless, the Glorious Qur'an revealed some of the complexities surrounding death, while Allah alone knows the rest: "Death is exactly like sleeping." And you will be completely unaware that you are dying. "You have no idea when the hour will arrive," Almighty Allah declared.

When you are finally placed to rest in your grave and all the people have departed. Your soul will be recovered right away. You'll blink open your eyes, grateful to Allah that you're still alive. Subhanallah! You will scream out in anguish and despair the moment you feel your bare body, the muddy stench of the tomb, and the white wrapped in your body. You will scream in panic as you have never felt before in your life. Then you will realize that there is no one to turn to except Allah. You will grieve and weep in genuine repentance, pleading for Allah's clemency.  May Allah have mercy on our souls.

If you just worship Allah and follow His instructions, two angels will descend to your grave to console you. The Angels will reveal to you that you are a believer, and hence no evil will befall you. If, on the other hand, you were among those who worshiped anything other than Allah and engaged in what is forbidden for them, two Angels will be sent down to your grave to chastise you and add to your pain. This marks the beginning of our eternal journey of reaping whatever we have sown on the earth. This is why we must be extremely mindful of what we do while we are living.

More significantly, some things may guarantee a pleasant afterlife. First and foremost, you must believe in Allah's Oneness. Every day, you must pray the compulsory prayer five times. As an adult, you must fast for the whole month of Ramadan. Pay zakat by the Prophet Muhammad's instruction (SAW). Avoid what is damaging to your soul and embrace what is good for it. Seeking Allah's forgiveness should be an ongoing process. Avoid backbiting and speak only when required. Purify your gaze. Respect your parents, spouses, children, family members, and the general public. Take no advantage of the downtrodden. AND YOU SHOULD NEVER, EVER, LOSE HOPE IN ALLAH'S FAVOR.

Ya Allah, I beseech You in the names You have bestowed upon Yourself to forgive our misdeeds. Ya Al-Latif, pity our souls. I am on my knees, begging Ya Al-Ghafur to forgive my sins as well as those of my parents, siblings, future wife and children, and friends. Keep my heart firm in Your faith and commitment and grant me true repentance before I die. Ya Arrahman, I beseech You in Your mercy for a pleasant ending. Ya Rabbil Alamin we worship You alone, and our return is to You. Ya Al-Hadiy, guide and guard us against disobeying You. May Allah have mercy on our souls and provide us with a pleasant ending.

Allahumma inni as'aluka al-Afiya.
