How the Supreme Court of Corruption Nullified Machina's Candidacy

Supreme Court of Corruption, Nigeria

The corruption in the Nigerian judicial system has left it unable to fulfill its role as a defender of justice and human rights, resulting in widespread injustice and the victimization of those who ought to be protected by the law.

The rampant corruption in the Nigerian judicial system has allowed rich and influential politicians to escape accountability for their actions, either through bribery or manipulation of the system. This leaves the marginalized and vulnerable to bear the brunt of an unjust system, while the wealthy continue to flaunt their unlawful immunity.

As you may recall, a few months ago, Nigeria held its primary elections in preparation for the upcoming February general elections. Before the primaries, each prospective candidate was allowed to purchase their nomination and expression of interest forms. It is widely known that in Yobe North, the incumbent senator, Ahmed Lawan, did not run in the primary election for the Yobe North senatorial district; instead, he lost in the presidential primary election. On the other hand, Bashir Sheriff Machina ran for the Yobe North Senatorial Seat in the primary election and emerged victorious with a substantial lead.

Surprisingly, after Lawan lost his presidential bid, he shockingly set his sights on the Yobe North seat he had decided not to run for. Initially, many thought the incumbent Senate President was being facetious. But, as it turned out, the rumors were true. This marked the beginning of the political turmoil in Yobe North that continues today. Nevertheless, Machina remained unwavering and persistent, much to the disappointment of Lawan and his allies.

When their attempts to pressure Hon. Machina's withdrawal from the race was unsuccessful, Senator Lawan declared war and initiated offensive propaganda against him. This did not intimidate Machina into submitting to their unscrupulous tactics. In a comedic turn of events, Lawan's camp regrouped and spread false stories claiming that Bashir Machina had resigned in favor of Lawan, and also they claimed he had left the APC. Notably, Machina debunked these fabrications in several interviews on BBC Hausa Radio.

Additionally, Lawan and his corrupt accomplices at the APC National Headquarters illegally instructed the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) to exclude Machina's name from the list of senatorial candidates running in the 2023 election in Yobe State. This prompted Hon. Machina to file a lawsuit against the party's national headquarters' decision. It was a blatant violation of sections 31, 34, 84 (1), and (2) of the amended 2022 Electoral Acts.

After a two-month-long hearing at the Federal High Court in Damaturu, Yobe State, between the plaintiff and defendant, on Wednesday, September 28, 2022, Judge Fatima declared the defendant's arguments baseless. Consequently, she ruled that Hon. Machina is the rightful senatorial candidate for the Yobe North district. This is because Ahmed Lawan was not a candidate in the district primary election, making his claims as credible as writing on water.

Although Ahmed Lawan publicly announced that he accepted the ruling against his illegal actions, he and his corrupt associates at the APC National Headquarters appealed the decision and lost again on November 28, 2022. Nevertheless, they brought the case to the Supreme Court of Corruption, which blatantly invalidated Hon. Machina's rightful candidacy for the Yobe North Senatorial seat.

This situation must be rectified. The citizens of Nigeria deserve a judicial system that is equitable and impartial, one that safeguards their rights and guarantees justice is served. Until this is achieved, the struggle for justice will remain a challenging pursuit.

Mighty Sheriffs, let it be known that the fight against injustice in Yobe North has only just begun. We refuse to accept this unjust outcome. We stand united with our leader Hon. Bashir Machina. This is our cause, and we will not stop until the corruption that has tarnished the Nigerian judicial system for too long is finally eradicated.

The citizens of Nigeria must advocate for genuine change; to advocate for a judiciary that is genuinely fair and free from corruption. Only then will the people of Nigeria have confidence in their justice system, and only then will they feel protected in their nation.

We support Hon. Machina, and will not stop until justice prevails.
