Striking a Digital Balance: Navigating Social Media During Ramadan

I found myself lost in the endless scrolling on social media, I couldn't help but feel a tinge of guilt. Normally, I don't spend too much time online, but given the significance of this month, I know I had to do better next time to not be caught up by surprise. I believe that Ramadan is a special moment of the year to focus on more meaningful pursuits like reciting the Holy Qur'an or diving deeper into an ocean of dhikr. This is why I decided to pen this topic in the hopes of inspiring others who may be struggling to strike a balance between their online and offline lives during Ramadan. Because let's face it, the struggle is real!

The smartphone is one of the most addictive technological devices that the world has ever seen. In my opinion, social media platforms are what made them more endearing to us. Admittedly, people nowadays never grow tired of scrolling up and down their social media feeds or intermittently checking for a new notification. This is our constant daily routine for the majority of us. Although I have to admit that not all people who are using smartphones care about these social platforms.

Moreover, it's nothing new that social media allows us to interact anytime with our family and friends, regardless of our locations. This has been one of the most important advantages of the ever-evolving social interaction platforms. Nevertheless, social media can soak up the majority of your time surfing the internet, and it can be difficult not to get caught up unknowingly. While in Ramadan, Muslims are encouraged to spend more time in the remembrance of Allah seeking his forgiveness and blessings. This is why so many people asserted that social media does us more harm than good. In this blog, we will discuss how social media can consume most of our time during this Ramadan and how to avoid being caught up by surprise.

To attain a better balance between engaging in Ramadan rituals and using social media, it is essential to establish a daily limit for your online presence. By setting a limit on the amount of time you spend surfing up and down, you pave the way for a smooth spiritual journey. This will allow you to allocate adequate time for activities such as reading the Qur'an, praying, and engaging in other spiritually enriching practices.

After setting a daily limit for your online activities, the next step is to plan your day effectively. This can assist you in adhering to the routines that you intend to accomplish. You may create a schedule for tasks such as reading the Qur'an, attending Tafsir, assisting your family with household chores, and engaging in social media activities, ensuring that these activities do not interfere with one another. It is also essential to prioritize the activities that are expected of you to practice in this holy month.

In addition, it is crucial to use social media wisely because it can swiftly divert your attention from worshipping Allah and seeking His forgiveness. This will push you to share your valuable knowledge and experiences about Ramadan. This approach will not only earn you great rewards from Allah but also leave a lasting legacy for others to follow.

By diligently implementing the key takeaways from this blog post, you can effectively manage your time both online and offline during Ramadan. Failure to do so, you will not be able to get the best out of it. Therefore, I strongly recommend reviewing your priorities by prioritizing the essential aspects of the month and making a sound decision for the sake of your spiritual growth and development. This approach can help you make the most of Ramadan and achieve your spiritual goals.
