From Commerce to Crime: Addressing the Rise of Phone Snatching in Kano

I am deeply concerned about the escalating incidents of phone snatching in Kano State, which have transformed the once-peaceful metropolis into a hub of criminal activity. It is distressing to see Kano's reputation shift from being a commercial epicenter to a city known for such crimes. To address this issue, the new administration, led by Abba Kabir Yusuf, must take bold and swift action.

Phone snatching not only affects the residents, or visitors of Kano but also tarnishes the city's reputation, making it less appealing to potential visitors. Kano, renowned for its dynamic businesses and attractiveness as a commercial destination, cannot afford to be plagued by such vicious criminal activities.

For instance, in 2019, my brother experienced a harrowing incident while traveling in a tricycle (Keke Napep) in Kano State. He was ruthlessly attacked with sharp blades by a group of hooligans who not only robbed him of his belongings but also subjected him to a violent assault. This personal account highlights the distressing reality of phone snatching in Kano and the severe physical and emotional toll it inflicts on innocent victims.

To address this alarming problem, it is vital to recognize that safeguarding Kano's peace and security is a collective responsibility. While security officials play an important role, the community's active engagement is essential. However, it is indispensable to avoid vigilantism and instead work in synergy with relevant authorities to ensure a lasting solution.

Before delving into potential solutions, it is essential to examine the main underlying causes contributing to the increase in phone snatching within Kano State. Economic factors, such as the lack of employment opportunities, push many youths towards engaging in this criminal activity. Understanding the root causes is crucial to developing comprehensive strategies that discourage involvement in such social vices, which will directly create a better future for the youth and the country by extension.

To effectively address this problem, I propose the following seven recommendations:

  1. Increase the presence of police officers during night patrols to improve overall security and provide a sense of safety to civilians.

  1. Create specialized divisions within the police force specifically tasked with tackling phone snatching cases, ensuring a rapid response to incidents.

  1. Create security checks in the most affected regions to deter criminals and increase the protection of innocent civilians.

  1. The government should draft legislation to impose drastic penalties for phone snatchers and similar offenses, acting as a deterrent and an unequivocal warning that the state will no longer tolerate such indiscipline.

  1. Organize comprehensive public awareness campaigns through radio stations and social media influencers to educate the public about the importance of what they should do in case confronted by phone snatchers.

  1. Establish a vigilant watch group led by community leaders to safeguard lives and properties, fostering a culture of mutual responsibility and cooperation with security agencies.

  1. Think ahead of the hooligans by adopting innovative technological interventions by collaborating with agencies specializing in phone tracking systems and telecommunication companies to hinder the usability and resale value of stolen phones, thereby discouraging potential perpetrators.

By implementing these measures and working together, peace can be restored in Kano state. I urge Kano residents to unite in their effort to combat this criminal activity and restore the reputation of Kano as a vibrant and secure center of commerce and tourism. I believe when you all come together with strong determination, Allah will guide and protect you in drastically eliminating this menace. This way, you will overcome this challenge and create a safer Kano for all.

  1. I've had a first hand experience (a horrible one) of such menace during my stay in Kano.

Nigga they operate in BROAD DAY Light. You'd see them walking in the streets, carrying wooden cudgels, cutlasses, machetes etc. With their BIG sack for gathering the phones they snatched/collected.

And bruh, if you think the police don't know them/about them, you're surely mistaken. Explains why the police are always accused of working with them by having some sorta share or cut from whatever the thugs gathered during their "operation"

Apparently the police know them and the govt know about them, bcz they literally have a hand in their rise via 'Political thuggery during election periods.

Ever heard of a man named Alhassan Bala Doguwa in Kano?? If not , read about him. I believe he should be a case study to political thuggery bedeviling Kano state.

So, what do these thugs do in the absence of elections?? Go back to their menial jobs of course (phone snatching and its likes)

Seen your recommendations btw. Some are viable while some are not tbh.

The Gov't really need to provide jobs (a real job) for those thugs cz most of them have none, Send them to school or something!?

The idea of implementing a vigilante group is also actually viable cz I've seen how Elrufa'I did that here in KD....and it works. But mind you, those thugs need to be part it. ESPECIALLY their ring leaders. That way such menace could really be curtailed drastically if not eradicated at all.
